The Greek city-state of Athens was one of the most prosperous, powerful, and influential societies in the world until conquest by Spartans led them to become one of the first states to fall completely due to defeat. The famous Acropolis, which stood at the western edge of Athens for centuries before falling victim to failure, has now been restored after its discovery in 1878. The Acropolis stands today as a monument for all people who believe that art is worth preserving and protecting. It's no secret that many cultures throughout history have failed due to conquest or destruction; however, it is still important that we learn from these failures both for our own future safety and civilization itself. In the case of Athens, the city-state was conquered in 338 BC by a Spartan army that outnumbered the Athenian army by three to one. In essence, the Spartans defeated Athens because they had a solid military strategy, were more disciplined soldiers, and had better leadership. It is also known that once a war has begun, if morale is low and no one believes they can win it is more than likely they won't perform to their fullest and will be defeated by an opponent with high morale. Societies today need to know what it means to fail so they can learn from their mistakes and avoid them in the future. No society will be without failure, whether it is on a small or large scale. For example, in ancient Rome there were many reasons for its collapse including the rise of Christianity, the barbarian invasions, and more. Societies throughout history have failed due to conquest or destruction; however, some of these societies are still considered to be one of the greatest civilizations that ever lived because they left behind pieces of what made them great- their art. Aristotle once said “art imitates nature” . He was right. So how can we learn from art? We can compare artwork from different periods and see if they match up with what took place in our world at that time. We can also compare art from different countries and see how they approach a particular topic in a similar or different way. Art, especially Ancient Greek art, has been around since the time of our civilization. Art is something that we have in common with others in history. It is a reminder of what it means to be human and an expression of who we are as a race. Art can also be used to improve our lives today by showing us the role it played in the past and how it will hopefully still be used to help us today. In order to learn from art we must know when it was made so we know if there is anything about the artwork that applies to us today. Ancient Greek art was produced in ancient Greece between the 16th and 6th century BC. The ancient Greeks were a people that learned from their mistakes and brought that knowledge with them into the future. They also had a society that focused on experimentation rather than discovery. Even though discovery came later, they still retained a lot of their learning from the past because it applied to them at the time. Although they were considered to be a “civilized state” many of their beliefs were considered to be barbaric by some other societies at the time.
